I just purchased an ikelite housing for a canon s100. The ikelite salesman talked me into their af35 strobe. After reading your site, i am thinking i won’t be happy with it. For a couple hundred more i could get an Inon S2000. What is your impression of the ikelite af35?

Thanks,
Jim

I am fairly new to U/W photography and have purchased a new system. I have an Olympus XZ-1 in a Nautica housing and I bought a Sea&Sea YS110a. I am concerned because of this article from reef photo’s website, I’ll let you read it so you can better understand what they are talking about:
XZ-1 Strobes
Inon strobes have been tested to provide very accurate optical ttl performance with the XZ-1 camera. For the smallest system possible S-2000 is a good match, and someone seeking a bit more power could pair the camera with Inon’s flagship Z-240.

We were not able to get any Sea & Sea strobe to function properly in DS-TTL mode with XZ-1. The only operating mode that offered in sync flash was a manual output from the camera (single flash), and the strobe in its single flash manual mode, which requires manually setting the flash output on the strobe head.

do you know of a way to make the ds-ttl work or should I return the strobe and get the Inon? thanks in advance for all help you provide.

Greg

Good informative article. I have a panasonic ZR3, for which I am looking for a good but budget strobe that will allow me to do both macro and some wide shots. So far I am leaning to the S&S YS-01, I have also looked at the new Fantasea Remora. How would you compare the 2? Also with the S&S package, is a optical pickup incluede I have only seen an optical cable with connections to a S&S camera?

Hi Scott, I have a Sea & Sea DX-1G camera with a single YS- 27dx strobe, I have been thinking about getting a second strobe for my camera but really do not know a lot about strobes and what to get. I would like to get a good one, & I know the one I have is fairly basic, however they would need to work together (want to use the 2 strobes together on my DX-1G) and Ideally I would want to get something that I could use if I upgraded to a more sophisticated Digital SLR underwater setup (I have a Canon 7D that I would love to put in a housing one day!!). Can you give me any advice? Thanks for your help.

I agree with Scott, – the Inon Z240 is definitely more powerful than the S&S 110a, hence the pricier tag. Great article, Scott! Hope I’ll be able to add the Z240 to my set-up(budget permitting) before my next trip 😉

I have a D200 in a Subal ND20 (single nikonos bulkhead) with a single newish ikelite DS125 and need to get a second strobe – any thoughts on the best option here? I would describe myself as enthusiastic amateur, main interest in diving is to take photos. Like both macro and W/A.

Alternatives seem to be another DS125 secondhand / DS160 (I have both the iTTL converter and the manual EV controller) so could use with or without cable

Keep the DS125 as primary or secondary strobe and pair it with something else e.g. house my nikon flash. DOes anyone have any experience knowledge of how the Nikon SB800 performs in a Subal housing?

Sell the DS125 and go for something completely different?

I would be delighted for any helpful input here

many thanks

david
