I’ve got the same setup, and I use it to take photo’s of bottom cover along a temperate reef for a survey. I end up taking a lot of pics, and I was hoping I could keep the exposure on Auto. But I’ve found that, even though in air the pics look great, underwater if I use the auto settings the photographs all look washed out and over exposed. I get by using the manual settings and adjusting the fstop and aperture, but was hopping to see if there are some settings I could adjust to let me use the auto settings.

I asked myself the very same
I asked myself the very same question. However a trial gave the answer: The D7000 seemed to have a highly reliable auto white balance that seemed to work well with still, video, ambient, strobes and LED continuous light. Broadly speaking, the blue effect of water is more related to the distance to the subject than the diving depth. Therefore the two variables to remember are firstly, the deeper you are the less the ambient light but this could be compensated by your artificial light, at least in part. Secondly, the blue effect is proportional to the distance to the subject. Wider lenses are therefore better in this respect unless if you intend to emphasize the effect of depth such as in shooting or filming silhouettes from a distance. I know someone who experimented with red filters, but this would be too technical for me!

I’m not experienced in
I’m not experienced in underwater photography – actually just learning about it – but if it is anything like surface photography then if you are shooting RAW (which I always do), then white balance shouldnt matter as you can correct it later when you put it into Lightroom/PS/Aperture etc.

If someone else knows better than this then pls feel free to correct me.

I have a D7000 in an Aquatica Housing. I am trying to figure out white balance settings for underwater. I know they should be readjusted about every 10′ underwater to get colors right when shooting video. Any suggestions? Is using one of the scene setting modes the right way to go? What about the manual white balance?

Hi Scott

Lovely shots!
Just changed from Ikelite/D90 to Ikelite/D7000. I think
I like the auto-ISO option. It might be useful with wide angle shots, to bring in more ‘background blue’. But might the higher ISO not also cause an overexposed foreground whith mixed lighting? Must try it out..
Also LIVE view is interesting, allowing to inspect the scene while holding the camera in different positions.
Cheers

I have the same set-up except I am using Inon strobes. About E3 setting, when I used 1/100 less power for internal flash, it also weakened my external Inon strobe power quite a lot even strobe switch is set to manual power. The difference is obvious underwater even for 1/8 setting. Do you have the same problem?
